Matatu industry is set to go digital before July 1st.
According to National Transport safety Authority, all Matatu owners are
required to adapt a cashless payment system before July 1st 2014.
The cashless system
will see fare cards replace cash exchange whereby passengers will pay their
fare using cards unlike previously passengers used to pay their fares directly
to the Public Service Vehicles conductors.
The card system has seen a tremendous success in the railway
transport sector. Matatu industry players will be required to install ‘black
boxes’ . This are electronic machines which will be used for transaction where
passengers will swipe their fare cards when paying their fares.
The Government
through a legal Notice by the National Transport safety Authority required all
the Matatu Owners to implement this cashless technology to help curb hiking of
fares during peak hours, holidays and special occasions in the country.
This system will embrace technology in road transport as
well as provide jobs through the monitoring of the gadgets by the Transport
Authority. Fare hike will soon be a thing of the past in our roads.
Do you think this improve road safety?
