(PDF) Evolving Role of Social Network Site Facebook in Pedagogy Laikipia University

This study sought to examine the evolving role of a social network site; Facebook in
pedagogy, Laikipia University, Kenya. It sought to investigate whether the Social Network
Site (Facebook) can be adopted as a communication tool to improve learning in pedagogy.
The objectives of the study are to identify the attitude of the students and staff in pedagogy
towards Facebook use for learning and establish the rate of adoption of SNS (Facebook) in
Laikipia University. The two objectives were used to develop research questions. Existing
literature was reviewed using open online journals and Uses and Gratifications theory
provided the framework to the study. A descriptive research design was adopted to
systematically describe the evolving role Facebook plays in pedagogy. Both qualitative and
quantitative methods of data collection were adopted. Questionnaires were used to collect
data from 45 purposively sampled undergraduate students, face-to-face interviews were
conducted with four (4) selected officials of Laikipia University administration and
netnography was conducted on Laikipia University official Facebook page for two (2)
months. Thematic content analysis and descriptive statistics were used to analyse the
gathered data. Data was analysed in line with the research questions where thematic concepts
and descriptions were developed. The findings were presented using frequencies,
percentages, line and bar graphs with the aid of Microsoft Excel 2010 for Windows. Audio
recorded interviews were transcribed, analysed using content analysis. The study established
that the rate of adoption of Facebook use in Laikipia University was high and steadily rising
and the attitude in pedagogy was exceptionally positive towards this approach of using
Facebook. Based on these findings, it was recommended that Laikipia University should
establish an office that integrates information from all departments so as to regularly channel
it using an active official Facebook page. The university should raise awareness on existence
of its official Facebook page.
